Some Do's and Don'ts for Moving Apartments Within Your Complex

April 12, 2022

Are you planning to move from one apartment in your complex to a different one? While most renters move to entirely new properties, sometimes it's not necessary to achieve your goals. Upgrading to a better unit or a larger one within your complex can save a lot of time and money. But it also has its own unique challenges. To help you have a successful apartment transfer, here are a few important do's and don’ts.

Do Hire Professional Movers

Just because you may not need to hire a truck — or that truck doesn't have to go far — doesn't mean you should skip the moving company. Apartment moves can be physically challenging in unique ways. There are often more stairs to navigate as well as tighter spaces overall. You'll be working around more people and their vehicles, and you must abide by property rules.

Trained movers will move your belongings safely and securely. This reduces the chances of injury to your friends and neighbors as well as damage to your furnishings. If the move involves any outdoor segments, professionals are particularly important if the weather might be challenging.

Don't Underestimate the Move

Many people view a very short-distance move as inherently less complicated than a long-distance move. But, in fact, other than not being on the road for as long, a short-distance move has nearly all the same obstacles and pitfalls. You'll need to pack up everything you own, be gone by a certain deadline, clean up after the work is done, and settle in at your new home.

Apartment renters are often busy people who may have little time to devote to packing up their homes. Your lease termination may creep up even faster than expected if you underestimate how much stuff you have or how long it takes to pack up. The best way to prevent this problem is to contract with professionals for at least some of the packing and unpacking work.

Do Be a Good Neighbor

If moving to a new area of the building or complex, start off on a good foot with your new neighbors.

Multiple, short trips back and forth could be disruptive, especially if you use smaller vehicles that require more repetition. Keep the actual move as organized as possible and try to minimize how long you spend monopolizing the parking and common areas. Ensure you work with professional, trained movers who will look out for neighbors and their wellbeing.

Don't Assume You Know the Unit

Because many apartment layouts are similar throughout the same complex or building, many people fail to carefully analyze their new apartment. But each unit invariably has some differences due to floor plans, remodeling over the years, window angles, and other elements. If upgrading to more bedrooms or a larger plan, your new home might be very different than your old one.

Walk the new unit with a careful eye focused on how your items will fit into it. You might even want to measure certain areas — particularly if you have large furnishings. If possible, walk through it with your moving crew so they can assess it based on their experience moving household goods.

Do Start Early

Talk to your landlord about getting access to the new apartment early. This gives you the chance to divide your move into multiple stages and do things in a more organized manner. If you can only work on the move on certain days, being able to do it over two weekends, for instance, could make it much less stressful.
